Filing an out-of-state claim


If you live outside of South Carolina and were separated from work with a South Carolina employer, you must file an out-of-state claim, commonly referred to as an Interstate claim, for unemployment benefits.

The Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW) only accepts new, additional and reopened Interstate claims online via the MyBenefits portal. You can access MyBenefits 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

File online using the following instructions:

  1. Go to MyBenefits.dew.sc.gov
  2. Create your account or sign into your existing account via the MyBenefits portal.
  3. After establishing your MyBenefits account, click on Apply for Unemployment Insurance Benefits
  4. Select Interstate claim for the workforce center nearest you and proceed with your claim. 

If you need technical assistance filing your online Interstate claim, the Online Filing Assistance Line is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST. This line can be reached by dialing 1-800-529-8339. 

After you file an Interstate claim, you will receive a packet in the mail that contains various forms and important information. You will also receive the name and contact information for your claim representative.  You are assigned a claim representative based on the last four digits of your Social Security number.

If further information is needed regarding your reason for separation from your employer, your claim representative will mail you a separate notice listing the date and time for a telephone interview within seven calendar days of filing your claim.  The Interstate Unit communicates with Interstate claimants by phone, mail, email and fax.  

It takes four to six weeks to process a Quit, Discharged or Still Working Claim. Lack of Work claims take two to three weeks to resolve.

How to file a weekly claim

Once you have filed an initial claim for unemployment benefits, you are required to file a weekly claim each week thereafter; even while you are waiting to find out if you are eligible.

You may do this via Teleclaim by calling 1-866-831-1725 from 4 a.m. until midnight EST, logging on to the MyBenefits portal and selecting File Your Weekly Claim on the homepage.

Note: Before you can file your first weekly claim, you must wait two to three business days after submitting your initial claim for the system to process your information.

Register for work

Once you become an Interstate claimant, you are exempt from registering for work with SC Works Online Services. 

However, you must register for work through the workforce center in the state you now live in within two weeks of becoming an Interstate claimant.

You still must actively search for suitable work each week that you file a weekly certification for unemployment insurance benefits.

Suitable work includes any trade, occupation, or business in which you are qualified based on your training or experience, and which pays at least 90 percent of your previous salary during your first eight paid weeks of unemployment and 75 percent of your previous salary after eight paid weeks of unemployment.

DEW may audit your claim at any point by requesting verifiable documentation of your weekly search for suitable work. As a result, DEW strongly recommends that you keep a detailed record of all your job searches, including the date of the contact, the name and address of the organization, the position applied for and the wage offered.

You may be disqualified from future benefits and required to repay benefits you have already received if you fail to provide DEW with verifiable proof of your active search for suitable work when requested.
