Continuing the trend from March, South Carolina again ranked second in the country for payroll employment growth, increasing 2.4 percent over the year. From April 2024 to April 2025, South Carolina added 57,300 jobs, which was exceeded by only seven other states, all with larger populations.

Job growth was spread across the state’s industries, but education and health services took the lead, adding nearly 11,000 jobs since April of last year, an increase of 3.6 percent. In second place, professional and business services added 10,700 jobs, a 3.4 percent increase. Growing the most was the construction sector, which increased employment by 7.3 percent, adding 8,500 jobs over the year. Figure 1 shows the change in employment in each sector.

Nonfarm payroll employment in South Carolina now exceeds 2,407,000, a sign of continued expansion of job opportunities in the state.
