Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act
The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) is designed to help jobseekers access employment, education, training and support services to succeed in the labor market, and to match employers with the skilled workers they need to compete in the global economy.
It is the first legislative reform of the public workforce system in 15 years.
WIOA is a federal program administered in South Carolina through the Department of Employment and Workforce and through 12 workforce development areas throughout the state. A statewide board appointed by the Governor and comprised of business owners, state government officials, educators and private citizens guides policy for all WIOA-funded programs. WIOA programs help businesses meet their need for skilled workers and provide individuals with access to training that helps them prepare for work.
Section 3(37) of WIOA states, "The term 'nontraditional employment' refers to occupations or fields of work, for which individuals from the gender involved comprise less than 25 percent of the individuals employed in each such occupation or field of work."
